Ok guys here we go for this weeks topic:
Swim Baits?
We have all heard or read about the swim bait craze out west and how it is moving east... we have also seen the obscene amount of shelve space they are now taking up in our local tackle shops, i have also noticed them starting to be taken down...
QUestion #1 : How many of you are actually using them?
Question # 2: of those using them how many of you are actually catching "more" fish on them?
Question #3: Which ones have you tried and which one did you like/dislike?
Question #4: how and where are you fishing them?
Question #5: any other comments or advice??

i've been trying them, used the storm, panther mainly shad colors of course.
havent caught anything but schoolies on them. i have small-large ones. i've bounced them,i've swimmed them pretty much to no avail, except schoolies....so i haven't caught "more" lol
they do look good and if i were a fish i'd hit one, but then again if i were a fish i'd been fried along time ago..

Question #1 : How many of you are actually using them? I LOVE them and have used them all over the country...in the right conditions. I can't wait to get to California and use the big trout ones!
Question # 2: of those using them how many of you are actually catching "more" fish on them?
Not more...BIGGER...never, and I mean never, have I caught a fish under 5#. It is not a numbers bait however.
Question #3: Which ones have you tried and which one did you like/dislike?
Storm makes the best by far but Optimum is right up there. Now there are some really high dollar ones out of CA.
Question #4: how and where are you fishing them?
Two ways...fisrt, I never swim them..misnomer...I drag them along the bottom SLOWLY. Storm has a flat bottom at the head that causes the bait to sit up and look like it is feeding on the bottom. Method two...hoppin it...big hops, little hops the fish tell...I have had more hits on big hops...the hammer it on the fall.
Question #5: any other comments or advice??
MUST, unless you want to break your rod...must use a heavy flippin stick. American Rodsmith makes a great swim bait rod that I use but I also use an old heavy flippin stick. I also use braided line with a fluorocarbon leader of HEAVY proportions (20#). The fish seems to take them deep and are hooked in the top of the mouth (Storms only have one hook, on the top and facing front). If you don't do this, they will break you off a bunch!
that is about it. Now that I said all that I think I will throw them tomorrow a bit.,

well, so far i have tried them very little, i caught a few schoolers on fayette, but there is something funny going on with the hook placement on the storm baits.... it seemed like when the fish took the whole thing in its mouth, while setting the hook, the bait was maybe too large to "rip" out of their mouth and let the hook penetrate... i guess... i really dont know, i just know that several fish came off after the hookset and a little fight... it was like they just opened their mouth and let go... I have tried the little ones for crappie, I got several bites, but they just bit the tail off never actually caught a fish... I will admit, it did not take retying but once or twice for me to switch back to a road runner... Thats my experience so far.... like i mentioned in the original post, i have noticed that Academy is starting to take some off the shelves..(i keep looking for some to show up in the clearance bin) .. this might be because they are not selling as expected.. i dont know ... Bill, and others that are using them, you might want to keep an eye out at Academy in the clearance bin... there might be an opportunity soon to load up... Those of you who want to try them (myself included) my also get the chance to do it a little cheaper..
