Ok here we go/.....
Whats your opinion on colors?
Do they matter ?
Is one color better than another?
etc.
etc
Me and Sandy have a kind of ongoing debate, he puts alot of faith into color, subtle differences in different baits etc. that will help him catch more fish.. different colors on different lakes, differnt times of the year, different water, different weather... etc.
i on the other hand i have 2 or 3 colors i throw everywhere, and i do not put alot of faith into different colors...
Now before i go any further, i am not going to try to speak for sandy,(we argue all the time about this) i am sure he will respond.. but i will put in my $.02
I really dont put much faith into different colors, i have basicly two colors... a dark one for dingy or dirty water and a lighter one for clearer water... well let me rephrase that, i have hundreds of colors (like most of us) but a couple of years ago i was running to different lakes fishing and i would go to one lake and "people" would say .. "(some color) was the color to use here" or "man they have been tearing them up on (some color)" well i would go and buy all sorts of new baits in that color... and so on....
then i started paying attention to tournament results.. and listening to what guys caught fish on... and it was all different colors on the same lake... the same day...
so then i started thinking.. is color really that important?
Now, i know we have all been in the boat throwing one color, switched and started catching fish, or the guy in front/back was catching on one color and the other guy couldnt catch until he switched...
well, i will give you something else to think about...
last year at a draw tournament, my backseater and i were fishing an area pitching to reeds along a channel...
well after i got my 5th, he still didnt have a bite... so i gave him the bait i was using... still nothing and i was culling.. i gave him the front of the boat... still nothing and i was still culling... i stood next to him and pointed to where to pitch.. once, twice, three times to the same spot, i pitch in there with the same bait after him and catch a fish... cull again... i give him my rod and i use his... still nothing and i cull again... end of the tournament, i had culled 5 or 6 times and he zeroed ..?
So i know it was not the color, so it had to be that i was doing something a little different...
so i start thinking some more... we have all switched to another color and caught fish, but was it the color or was it a "renewed" confidence and something we did a little different with the new color?
I have come to beleive that if you put it in front of them and they are hungry it doesnt really matter what color it is... and if color really mattered everything would be shad colored... i have never seen a watermelon colored baitfish... that leads me to think that even with soft plastics what we get is a reaction bite, with all that being said, i will change colors depending on water clarity, i do think they can see some colors better in different color water, but i will tend to pick one and stick with it.. i may change twice in a day.. if that..
all in all i look at it this way, the longer i keep a hook in the water the more chance i have to catch fish... when i am changing baits, i am waisting casts... so i try not to change..
I hope some of this makes sence...
