Am I the only Champion owner on the sight? If not I have some questions for someone with more experience than me about set up on my 04 187.

Sorry Robert but we don't have many people here yet. I just put this up yesterday. I wasn't sure if I should put boat forums up or just have one forum for boats. As things move along I will ask more friends to join us that can answer setup questions.

RobertP,
I have a 97 191 DC elite with a Mariner 200EFI sitting on a 6" jack plate. I am running a 25" pitch prop set at 3.5" below the pad. I also use a Sting Ray fin on the cavitation plate. And yes it does help the hole shot. I started using a fin back on my Ranger, the boat would mush forward and then slowly drop the nose. The Champion does benefit, it reduces the time to get on the pad. I don't worry about knowing the speed, it just does what it does. I had adjusted the prop higher but it blows out when I make hard turns. I don't know if this will help you or not.

I am running a 2004 187 DC with a 2004 Yamaha 150 V-Max a 10" jackplate and a 23M Yamaha prop that has had some cup added to it.
Everything I see says to run the nose cone 3.5" below the pad but I can't due to boat falls off pad very easy. I have it at 4 1/4" below the pad and it still falls off pad and blows out in the turns both ways. Also if I am running on pad and give it some gas the boat will fall down and I have to back off of it to let it catch and it will pop back up. I have ran 4 other props and all do the same thing 4 blade props included. Any help welcomed. I was told to take my prop to Bridge City and let Coastal Prop's work on it. He is supposed to be very good and his equipment is up to date unlike the last guy I let work on it. Is this a prop problem?

RobertP,
When you measure the nose cone are you measuring inline from the pad bottom to the centerline of the prop shaft?
The pad measurement needs to be from the bottom of the boat, not the set back under the transom.

I am measuring it correct. Leveling the trailer, motor and running a straight edge from the running pad.
I went to Coastal props this afternoon and he is going to rework my prop. Add some more cup and sharpen the edges cause they are flat. Said it will take care of the problems. Last guy who worked my prop did a poor job. He did not cup it where it needed it and some other things. Will let you know how it works out. Allot of people with this set up are having the same problems. If it works out this will be some usefull info. I have been fighting with it since Febuary.

Thanks Robert,
You have a handle on it now, I didn't intend to imply that you didn't know what you were doing.
Just trying to set a base line.
I look forward to hearing your success story!

ChampioN owner (15 yrs.). Just got registered. I'm no computer guru, so John had to help me. Mine's a fishing machine, not a speed boat. Not the prettiest to look at, but it sure fish's good and it's paid for. Sandy

Bill,
That is a nice boat, good price too, unfortunitly I need a bigger house so I can move my Mother in. She is to old to be taking care of herself.
Self induced priority's are a real drag.

Guys, assuming a level shop floor, I suggest levelling the pad rather than the trailer as all boats may not set level on the trailer. Afterthat is done, lower the motor until the cavitation plate is level. Measure from the center of the propshaft to the floor and subtract that that measurement from a measurement from the bottom of the pad to the floor. Easier than trying to hold a straightedge to the pad and measuring the distance to the nose cone. ;D

<<Love the boat but not the engine>>
Gosh, I would never switch my 'rude for another brand unless it was given to me. I have been running them for 20 years and through it all only ONE time did the motor let me down...unlike most rumors about them...that was last year at the BASS Open at sam...lower unit frozen...we knew it would...there was too much torque on those standard units...it was only a matter of time...most go at 2 years...but the power head? never? Computer? yes....
My dealer sells all three major brands and he knows how much I run my boat between tournaments and guiding and every time I go to buy new boat he says...Evinrude....and I agree
