Are you looking for one to get back in the boat in an emergency or one to board the boat often like when you are swimming or tubing with the kids?

Mainly emergency but I thought they might make a fold up that could be mounted permanently
also on these hot days I sometimes just jump in to cool off

For emergencies, i.e. you fell in accidentally, just stand on the cavitation plate of your outboard and hit the 'up trim' button and then step into the back of your boat. There are a number of telescoping ladders that are available at most dealers. Some of these get pretty pricey. If you just want one for occassional use, the 'quickstep boarding ladder' is a good bet. You can get it at West Marine for around $20.
