The G Loomis thread got me to thinking which is more important the Rod or the Reel I know the line is important it and as in most things in life is only as strong as the weakest link
on one hand we have a great reel smooth easy can be counted on to cast perfectly every time but the sensitivity of the rod tells if you have a strike or a hit or going thru trees and other structure.
some say the reel is only a winch and do not need a great one Then again some say the same thing about the rods all it does is set the hook and is leverage to get the fish in
Which do you feel is the most important

But what if you could only have one or the other Great rod and a $50 reel or Great reel and a $50 rod
which is the better combination

Dang Bill your making it harder. I would say the rod is more important because people fish with out reels all the time for Crappie.
On your second question though I think I would go with a better reel than rod.

My wife said she would prefer a better rod to a better reel

which rod is she referring to.... Definitely a better reel than rod. Give me a curado sf and I can put it on a cheap rod and still have a good day on the water. heck, you can get a decent rod at academy or bps for $50, but what kind of reel can you get for that price???

I think it all depends on how you fish your equipment. If you always cinch down the drag, use heavy line and horse them in, then the reel means very little.
I do not do that. My drave is set light in most situations so I would say they are of equal value. You need a good rod and reel to get a good fish to the boat.

I want to feel the fish, I vote for the rod, but my reels cost more than my rod's.
I don't follow my own advice, but I can wave a towel.

I would have to say it depends on what bait I am throwing on that day. I can not throw a wacky worm with a cheap reel and if I am chunking a spinnerbait it does not matter what kind of rod I am using.

Agreed, when I throw a big swim bait on Fayette I use a 20 year old heavy flipping stick and a 10 year old 4.4 reel. cbs

i'm w/ ed.... BOTH!!!!
the more sensitive the rod the better the feel which is good in most cases....and it will be lighter less fatigue the smoother the reel the more accurate and longer your cast will be....
i've been throught the low end. then tried the mid end and thought that was good enough, then i fished w/ my friends high dollar rod and reel. and WOW!! i could really tell a huge differences in feel and accuracy!!! i thought i'd get a new high dollar r/r combe each year till i got relieved of all my r/r on the bend.... yep, i spent some money that week.....
after the rayburn ralley, todd got 3 new high end r/r after testing mine.....
my new theory is if your gona do it, do right... don't take any short cuts....and the plus end is you want have to worry is there something better!!

You will be better off buying one or two expensive outfits (rod&reels) than going cheap... eventually you will upgrade to the good stuff and the money spent on cheaper rods/reels will have been wasted..... trust me i bet i have 30 or 40 cheaper rods and reels in my garage that havent been used in 6 or 7 years.... all wasted money..

I agree you need a good rod I can tell the difference when I use one of my lower end rods over my caras or loomises the sensitivity just isnt their. I am upgrading my rods to the better built ones mostly caras for the money.
I use aall kinds of reels I have pinnacle matrix 10s I have a shimano chronarch and some cabelas bps and others for the money the quantum energy pt series is hard to beat. spinning reels I use soley okuma or abu cardinals.
