Ugly Otter Company: Gambler Lures
Reviewed by BassFan Staff
Gambler Lures continues to develop new products designed for the flipper and pitcher, and its newest creation – the Ugly Otter – is already getting rave reviews.
The Ugly Otter, which has only been out for a few weeks, combines the best aspects of all the Gambler products. It comes in 14 great colors with a tapered- and flat-body style complete with air-catching ribs. There's a Gambler paddletail on both the tail and stabilizing wings, and it can be customized by cutting the wings and/or tail. But it fishes great right out of the package too.
The real beauty of the Ugly Otter is its fishability in and around heavy cover. The tapered body works perfectly with a 5/0 hook, heavy line and the heavy weights so popular for heavy cover. However, it fishes equally well on lighter line and smaller hooks. Because the body of the bait is flat – about a half-inch thick and 1 1/2 inches across – the 4-inch Otter is perfect for flipping.
And the ribs hold the hook well, but also allow for easier penetration on the hookset. One of the other features we particularly like is the beefed-up hook area. This allows one bait to be used on more than one fish. Simply put, it doesn't get torn up as quickly.
That covers flipping, but the Ugly Otter also deserves a spot in your Carolina-rig box next to your lizards and other creature baits. The versatile bait can even be fished weightless over and around vegetation. Fished in this latter fashion, the bait works much like a small buzzbait, but unlike a buzzbait, it can be dropped in the holes.
The creature bait craze continues, and Gambler has added another killer product to the lineup. It definitely hit the mark again with the Ugly Otter.

I have a bunch of the otters and love em they are softer than the beavers and fish hold on to them better I think the in between size is also a plus. jury is still out on my favorite color.

This Sweet Beaver knock off is just that. A rating of more than 1 for innovation is a joke. I have used them and talked to numerous tackle shops about them. Many ordered a few but then bailed out and stuck with the Beavers. If someone wins something on them or FLW/BASS cover them in a article then they may take off...Otherwise, I will stick to the Beaver...besides most fisherman prefer beaver to otter.
