When someone talks about getting their first Kistler rod it brings back memories. The first thing that comes to mind is when I first saw a post talking about the Kistler Helium rods about a month before my birthday last year. I started to research the rods and at first I was skeptical. Why? Well then I was using All Star and Daiwa rods and I was happy with what I was using. There couldn’t be a better rod on the market I kept telling myself as I looked at the $200+ price tag on the rod. Well I researched as much as I could possibly do and after reading a review about the rod from the guys at TackleTour.com I decided that I was going to try a rod out.
Well let’s fast forward to July 20, 2004 when the rod arrived and it was right on time. I was sitting by the door waiting on UPS to deliver the rod. Well the doorbell rang and there was a huge white PVC pipe. I was like why the heck is a PVC pipe being delivered to my house. Then I looked at the address and it was from Kistler rods. That was the first time I had a rod delivered in a PVC pipe but after thinking about it that is the best way to ship a rod without it breaking. After opening the tube up there was the new rod. A 7’ Medium Heavy Kistler Helium LTA rod. Even with the bubble wrap on it, the rod was still lighter then all of the other rods that I own. After taking all of the wrapping off of it and putting the Team Daiwa X reel on it I was in heaven. I could see why people give the rod such high reviews.
I took the rod out that night to test it out. I was amazed by the sensitivity of the rod. I could feel every rod, brush pile, and even the fish breathing on the bait. After catching several fish with it I knew that I wanted more of the Kistler rods and little did I know then that 6 months later I would be on their Pro Staff.
Here I am a little over a year later with numerous Kistler rods and some people say that I am biased with my opinion but I was like most guys a year ago when I thought the $200+ price tag was crazy but I have not looked back since the first rod.
Since my first Kistler rod I found out why people like the lighter weight reels. I put a Team Daiwa Fuego on my 7’ Medium Kistler Helium rod when it was available and I amazed at the lightweight combo. After fishing a tournament for 6 hours I was not fatigued at all at the end of the day. In the past at the end of the day I was very fatigued and it had to be because of the heavier rods and reels.
I hope that if you were thinking about purchasing a new Kistler rod that I helped you with you decision some. If you have any questions feel free to email me or PM me with them.
Thanks,
