Usually every 2 years is good on a freshwater boat. If you have been thru gunk, grass, silt or sand. Maybe sooner would be necessarry.

Got one more question
how often do you put the impeller kit ($86) in with a new stainless steel housing and seals in verses just the impeller $26

That depends on the condition of the cup. If there is a lot of wear inside ,or scratches that can be felt with your fingernails, I'd replace the cup. The housing is the plastic part that all the junk fits into, if it is warped on the bottom, or has been changed several time, you need to replace it. I usually do the pump kit with the cup just to make sure there are no worries later. No worries mean more fishin'!

I know this sounds crazy but I have only changed mine 2 times in 14 years. Because i use my boat at least once each month it never dries out. I am due to change it now and probably will this summer. Each time I've changed it (had it changed) I inspected the impellar and it looked like new. As long as you use the boat on a regular basis and don't go through a lot of sand and crap they will not go bad as soon. If left sitting dry for months they will go bad real quick. BTW, at WOT my water pressure last weekend was over 30 psi and it was peeing like a 5 year old boy.
